About Our Presenters

Joel Fuhrman

Joel Fuhrman, M.D.is a board-certified family physician, nutritional researcher, and six-time New York Times best-selling author. He serves as the President of the Nutritional Research Foundation. Dr. Fuhrman has authored numerous research articles in medical journals and is on the faculty of Northern Arizona University, Health Science Division. His two most recent books are Eat to Live Quick and Easy Cookbook and Fast Food Genocide.

Dr. Fuhrman has appeared on hundreds of radio and television programs including, the Today Show, Good Morning America, Live With Kelly and Michael, and The Dr. Oz Show. His four PBS television shows have been some of the top fundraising shows for PBS, which have not only benefited PBS, but also improved the health of millions of people across America.

Dr. Fuhrman is a graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. He is a former world class figure skater, second in the United States National Pairs Championships in 1973, and third in the World Professional Pair Championships in 1976. He is involved with sports medical committees and provides guidance to professional and Olympic athletes on maximizing performance and preventing injury. Neal Barnard

Neal Barnard, M.D., FACC is an Adjunct Professor of Medicine at the George Washington University School of Medicine in Washington, DC, and President of the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine.

Dr. Barnard has led numerous research studies investigating the effects of diet on diabetes, body weight, and chronic pain, including a groundbreaking study of dietary interventions in type 2 diabetes, funded by the National Institutes of Health, that paved the way for viewing type 2 diabetes as a potentially reversible condition for many patients. Dr. Barnard has authored more than 90 scientific publications and 20 books for medical and lay readers, and is the editor in chief of the Nutrition Guide for Clinicians, a textbook made available to all U.S. medical students.

As president of the Physicians Committee, Dr. Barnard leads programs advocating for preventive medicine, good nutrition, and higher ethical standards in research. His research contributed to the acceptance of plant-based diets in the Dietary Guidelines for Americans. In 2015, he was named a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology. In 2016, he founded the Barnard Medical Center in Washington, DC, as a model for making nutrition a routine part of all medical care.

Working with the Medical Society of the District of Columbia and the American Medical Association, Dr. Barnard has authored key resolutions, now part of AMA policy, calling for a new focus on prevention and nutrition in federal policies and in medical practice. In 2018, he received the Medical Society of the District of Columbia’s Distinguished Service Award. He has hosted four PBS television programs on nutrition and health.

Originally from Fargo, North Dakota, Dr. Barnard received his M.D. degree at the George Washington University School of Medicine and completed his residency at the same institution. He practiced at St. Vincent’s Hospital in New York before returning to Washington to found the Physicians Committee.

Brooke Goldner

Brooke Goldner, M.D. is a board certified medical doctor and the author of 2 best-selling books, Goodbye Lupus and Green Smoothie Recipes to Kick-Start Your Health & Healing. She has been featured in multiple documentaries such as Eating You Alive, Whitewashed, and The Conspiracy Against Your Health, has been featured on TV news and the Home & Family Show, as well as many radio shows and podcasts, and is a highly sought after keynote speaker who shares the stage regularly with Drs. Ornish, Esselstyn, Bernard Greger and T. Colin Campbell, to name a few.

Dr. Goldner has been featured on the front cover of Vegan Health & Fitness Magazine 3 times, including the recent cover of Fit Over Forty. She is a regular contributor to T. Colin Campbell Center for Nutrition Studies and she is featured in the Journal of Disease Reversal reversing lupus in herself, as well as multiple case studies in reversing end-stage kidney failure with her hyper-nourishing nutrition protocol.

Dr. Goldner is a graduate of the Temple University School of Medicine, was Chief Resident at UCLA-Harbor Residency, and holds a certificate in Plant-Based Nutrition from Cornell University. She is the founder of GoodbyeLupus.com and creator of the Hyper-nourishing Protocol for Lupus Recovery.

Frank Sabatino

Frank Sabatino, D.C., Ph.D. is the Program Director of the Balance for Life Health and Fitness Retreat, a new health and lifestyle education and fasting center located in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Dr. Sabatino is a chiropractic physician who also has a Ph.D. in cell biology and neuroendocrinology from the Emory University School of Medicine. He is a past member of the prestigious Brookdale Fellowship in Gerontology and Aging, a current member of the International Association of Hygienic Physicians, and one of the world’s leading experts on medically supervised water-only fasting. Cyrus Khambatta

Cyrus Khambatta, Ph.D. is a cofounder of Mastering Diabetes and an internationally recognized nutrition and fitness coach who has been living with type 1 diabetes since 2002. Using an evidence-based approach to nutrition and fitness, he first reduced his own insulin usage by more than 40%, and has educated thousands of people with all forms of diabetes how to reverse insulin resistance using food as medicine.

Cyrus earned a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Stanford University in 2003, then earned a Ph.D in Nutritional Biochemistry from the University of California at Berkeley in 2012. He is the co-host of the annual Mastering Diabetes Online Summit, a featured speaker at the Plant-Based Nutrition and Healthcare Conference (PBNHC), the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM) Conference, Plant Stock, and has been featured on Forks Over Knives, NPR, PBS, KQED, Fast Company, and is the author of the upcoming book, Mastering Diabetes.

Dana SimplerDana Simpler, M.D. (Co-Host) is a board certified Internist and graduate of University of Maryland Medical School who has been in private practice in Baltimore for 29 years. She has always been interested in nutrition to treat disease, and encourages her patients to incorporate a plant-based diet and other healthy choices into their lifestyle as a powerful way to prevent the advance of cancer, heart disease, and diabetes. Dr. Simpler has gone outside typical medical conferences to become educated in the latest nutritional science as it relates to disease treatments, which makes her approach to nutrition unique among today’s physicians.  Dr. Simpler frequently appears on the WBFF Fox45 Baltimore Morning News to discuss the role of healthy nutrition in achieving and maintaining optimal wellness. In addition to her private practice, Dr. Simpler sponsors community health conferences and corporate wellness programs, including the CHIP program, CHIPHealth.com. Sharon McRae

Sharon McRae, CHC (Co-Host) is a plant-based Certified Health Coach residing in Howard County, Maryland, who has been applying principles of health and nutrition in her own life for more than three decades. She is also a certified instructor for the Physicians Committee for Responsible Medicine’s (PCRM) Food for Life program, teaching nutrition and cooking classes at locations throughout the community. Sharon offers nutrition and health coaching to clients and families and conducts special events such as workshops, seminars, and food store tours. Sharon is also the founder and organizer of the Columbia, Maryland Forks Over Knives Meetup Group (www.meetup.com/Columbia-MD-Forks-Over-Knives-Meetup) which includes over 1,800 members and meets for a monthly plant-based, whole-food potluck dinner in Howard County, Maryland. The meetup group also meets for outings to local restaurants that provide special whole-food, plant-based menu options, and members keep in touch with each other on the meetup group’s Facebook page.
